Support for carers

Caring for someone with MS

Caring for someone with MS is not fundamentally different from caring for someone with another disability. Individual needs vary from help within the home eg shopping, housework, gardening, DIY to more personal issues such as washing, dressing, feeding and toileting.

Becoming a carer

Family members may become carers by default, friends or professional carers by choice. Most care needs develop gradually, but occasionally a relapse may trigger a need for a re-evaluation of lifestyle activities. The most important thing to remember is that you are not on your own. Caring can be stressful at times and the MS team will be there to answer questions, offer advice and provide support.

It is crucial not to get overwhelmed by caring, or feel guilty if you cannot do everything. Carers need a break too and this may be some extra help, a holiday or the decision that a loved one needs to have more permanent care arrangements. Your MS team will help you to work out what is best for the person you are caring for, as well as yourself, and help you find the right solutions.
